When I became a step-parent, it was disheartening to see how few resources there were available for navigating the day to day realities of step-parenting: those that didn't resort to the evil stepmother cliche or, by contrast, the hugely positive role that a step-parent can play in a young person's life. I myself have two step-parents and found that they offered a very different perspective on life as I was growing up than either of my own parents were equipped to do. I have benefitted enormously from being open to the role that they could play in my life and it would be so wonderful to think that each incidence of divorce and remarriage could pave the way for even more love and support in a young person's life.
Sadly, this isn't always the case, with hard feelings and bitterness marring the positive impact a step-parent can play and the wonderful advantages that a large, extended, and blended, family can have on all members.
One of the things I enjoy most in our own blended family is the growing relationship between my daughters and her elder half-siblings. It is such a joy to see the delight my eldest has every time they come to visit and she certainly takes advantage of opportunities to be spoilt! My husband and I, too, welcome the opportunity for free babysitting too when they come visit!
It isn't always easy navigating the needs of toddlers and teenagers within a blended family but it is wonderful to see the opportunities that life presents for a larger sense of family in today's world.
